Week 6 Gravity in Space

Objects in the solar system are falling and never quite hit the Sun or the ground.

Gravity is a force which keeps all of the planets orbiting around the sun. As the mass of the planet increases its gravity increases.

Heavy planets have stronger gravity than light planets. We went to see how much we weighed on other planets at Enchanted Learning.

The Sun exerts the greatest gravitational force in the Solar System.

Week 5 What affects planet temperature?

This week we found out what affects the temperature of the planets. We tried out online-pioneer and altered the albedo (refelctiveness) of the planet. We also changed the thickness of the planet's atmosphere and the planet's distance from the sun. All these made a difference to the planet's temperature.

Post a message saying what you learned this week.

Week 4 Space Probe Design and Launch

Here are our space groups.

This week online, we are designing and launching a space probe to our planets. We will be posting comments about how successful we were.

In the online activity we have to look at:
What power supply to use.
eg battery and solar power or nuclear power

What thermal control to use.
eg passive cooling (sunshades and reflective paint)
active cooling (refrigerators to keep cool)
active heating (electric heaters to keep warm)

What size of rocket to use.
eg small rocket which can launch a small probe with not too much equipment on board.
medium rocket which can launch a medium sized probe with more equipment
large rocket that can launch more complex probes.

But remember the larger the probe the more expensive they are!!

In class we made some rockets and tried to make them move across the room!

Week 3 Distances of the Planets from the Sun

This week we have been finding out about the distances of the planets from the sun. We designed out own mnemonics for remembering the planet order.

The distance of the Earth from the Sun is called 1 Astronomical unit. 1 Astronomical unit is 149 598 000 kilometres!

Week 2 Our Solar System

This week in space school we learned about the planets in our solar system. We made a space timeline and a model of the solar system

Ticket to Space 2006

Welcome to our blog! Primary 5/6 is taking part in Ticket to Space during our science lessons. Our blog will be a record of all our learning. We're looking forward to starting space school after the October holiday.
